5/30/2023 0 Comments Books by david ezra stein![]() ![]() ![]() This review was published in the School Library Journal January 2018 issue. VERDICT A seasonal read with storytime potential and staying power, Honey is not to be missed. Throughout, the art balances the straightforward sensory details of the text, with some actions described and others-such as a well-deserved bee sting on the nose-purely visual (“Busy bees don’t like to be bothered.”). Highlighting the natural greens and golds of summer, Stein’s pen-and-watercolor illustrations are suffused with loose, childlike exuberance, while their relatively small scale (each page is bordered with ample white space) invites a sense of intimacy, drawing readers into the bear’s anticipation and eventual satisfaction. ![]() In the meantime, the other delights of spring and summer beckon, and the bear relishes warm grass, bursting berries, and rushing rain as he waits for the telltale buzz that heralds his favorite treat. Though he can remember it perfectly, “spicy, aromatic, sparkling with sunlight,” he soon realizes that it’s too early in the season to find any honey. PreS-Gr 2 –The curious young bear from Leaves returns for “his second year,” fresh from hibernation and eager for the taste of honey. Award-winning children’s author and illustrator David Ezra Stein was born in Brooklyn, New York. ![]() ![]() ![]() In this original and gracefully written book, Mary Elizabeth Berry considers the social processes that drove the information explosion of the 1600s. ![]() They subsequently circulated their findings through a variety of commercially printed texts: maps, gazetteers, family encyclopedias, urban directories, travel guides, official personnel rosters, and instruction manuals for everything from farming to lovemaking. After 1600, self-appointed investigators used the model of the land and cartographic surveys of the newly unified state to observe and order subjects such as agronomy, medicine, gastronomy, commerce, travel, and entertainment. ![]() A quiet revolution in knowledge separated the early modern period in Japan from all previous time. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments The last lie patricia forde![]() ![]() One other thing I was horrified by was seeing how all Ark citizens were so obliviously following Noa. But, I did enjoy (and was a bit terrified) seeing how people were forced to converse using 500 words or less and would be banished if they didn't speak List. ![]() I figured out later that it was dystopian. Also being truthful, given my lack of experience reading dystopian novels, I was a bit confused, at first, as to whether Ark was utopian or dystopian. In the first 100 pages or so, I didn't really get the plot or what the climax would be. However, being truthful, it took me a while to really get into the flow of reading this, but once I was, it was full steam ahead. Once I picked the book up (because of the cover) it sounded too interesting to put it back down, after reading the synopsis. What personally made me pick up this book was, in fact, the cover. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Speechless book hannah harrington![]() ![]() I went through my shelves, and decided that Speechless sounded really good, and I was curious about Hannah Harrington’s writing, since I also have Saving June sitting right next to it. ![]() I decided to read this book when I really wanted a contemporary, preferably something backlist that hasn’t been talked about in a while. Curious, I added it to my order, and it sat on my shelf for over a year before I finally decided to pick it up and read it (you know, because I like to continuously buy books, not read them, and then buy more).Īnyway, back to Speechless. ![]() Speechless was actually published a few years back, but I haven’t even known about it until recently, when I got it from Harlequin on one of their big sale days. ![]() ![]() P, passes out textbooks, Junior realizes that the books are at least thirty years old. On his first day of high school at Wellpinit (the school on the reservation), Junior is particularly excited for geometry class. Rowdy always protects Junior, though, and the two boys share a special bond, telling each other their secrets and dreams. He also loves spending time with his best friend, Rowdy, whose violent temper makes the other kids afraid of him. He loves to draw, and thinks his cartoons pose his best chance of getting off the reservation and out of the poverty that has held his family and his tribe back for generations. As a result, Junior has spent a lot of his time alone, reading or drawing cartoons. ![]() This condition gave him a stutter, seizures, and a number of physical differences, such as a large head, that make him a frequent target for bullies on the reservation where he lives. Fourteen-year-old Junior, a Spokane Indian boy, was “born with water on the brain” or hydrocephalus. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Original babar the elephant![]() Between 19, he completed a body of work that forever changed the face of the illustrated book.” His books, as Maurice Sendak once observed, “have a freedom and charm, a freshness of vision, that captivates and takes the breath away. Subsequent editions have taken every imaginable shape and form, but the luxuriously large volumes are still the best way to fully appreciate Jean de Brunhoff’s mastery of the picture-book form. The original Babar books were oversized in format, with the text printed in script. Six more Babar books by Jean de Brunhoff followed quickly, including Babar and His Children (1938) and Babar and Father Christmas (1940), which were published after his death. ![]() Their enthusiasm for the tales encouraged their artist father to shape them into illustrated books, beginning with The Story of Babar (1933). ![]() The inspiration for Babar came from Madame de Brunhoff, Jean’s wife, who told stories about a little elephant to amuse her young children. Created by Jean de Brunhoff in the 1930s, continued by his son, Laurent, in the following decades, and available now in every manner of merchandise, the character has enthralled generations of children all over the world with his Victorian rectitude and pachyderm panache. If there is a universal symbol for childhood, Babar the elephant is probably it. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Bring up the bodies bbc![]() ![]() "Television drama has rarely supplied such a hypnotic spectacle." The main character of this tale, Monique, really stood out to me.
